PROGRAMMED TICKER TIMER
The 'Stacked Stopwatch' is a timer inspired from the spinning motion and the way it juxtaposes time.Having done all the design and construction, including electrical fixing and set-up, Trisha wishes to create a timer that, ironically isn't a conventional clock.
Created as a project for a class at Massachusetts Institute of Art, Design and Technology's department of Architecture and Planning as a required exercise for learning about various electric components and their uses, The Stacked Stopwatch contains a mechanism run by an Arduino Uno, including the stepper motor as the primary electric component that design is centered around.
The intention was to create a device that expresses time through motion- as the stopwatch gives a rhythmic count of 10 seconds- without using any kind of direct language for the user to understand it.
Research & Mind Mapping
The assignment focused on ideating, iterating, programming, engineering, painting and refining a ticker timer that would measure and convey time at specific intervals through movements.
This quick 1-week task involved quick thinking research of looking up making methods, material options, kinds of timers and the kinds of movements they would perform to convey time.
The movements were inspired by spinning, lifting and rotating.
The Movement plan
Based on what i thought and felt of the experience, a few ideas for the final project were generated.
Mostly, I wished to focus on the enormity that I felt of the place- 'huge' and 'monumental'. I wished to highlight the way my pattern detached me from the closeness of the bushes, and seemed to double the size and distance of each tree, person and park's element from one another.
Following the first batch of ideas and selecting the most suitable ones, I tried to focus on the installation's appearance, as well as the way it would interact with its audience. After thorough mindmapping, the shadow lamp was chosen for further work.
HOW IT WORKS
The Button needs to be pressed to activate 1 cycle.
Keep the button pressed for cycle to continue.
The square plates begin spinning consecutively in 1 direction.
Once 10 seconds are up, the squares stop spinning consecutively.
(In the same pattern as when they're started)
Similarly, the spinning begins in the opposite direction for the next 10 seconds.
(The cycle repeats until the button is kept pressed).
The cycle stops only when the button is released.
The technical drawings for the stacked stopwatch are made to size and focus on elements other than wood to be used.
